Saw Kennedy was born in 1973 in the Karen State in Burma. He is a charcoal and watercolor artist and art teacher. Since he was young he heard about art everyday from his brothers, this made him want to become an artist. He learned to believe in himself. All his brothers are artists, so it was natural for him to become an artist too. His older brothers Saw Chu Cil and Saw Eh Eh have their own distinguished styles.    

“Although I studied under my two brothers, my style is very different from them,” he explained. Saw Kennedy has 5 artist brothers, is married and has a beloved son. “I love painting a lot, but my son is more precious.” If he feels good about something he sees, he wants to paint it, whatever the subject is. He paints to give his audience pleasure. He uses strong light and deep darkness. Because of the conditions of his life, he is moving around, from here to there and this changes his painting style. He will never abandon art. Everything is picturesque.

“The love for my son inspires me the most,” he said.

He has used charcoal since he was young. Now he uses mixed media. He teaches at different schools around Mae Sot, Thailand. He is very grateful for the opportunities he got from Borderline. Currently Kennedy is an intern at the Borderline Gallery in Mae Sot, and he shares his experiences with his fellow artists.

He has painted most pictures without a background because he doesn’t want to see the background

He thinks that a background can give two kinds of feelings

He wants to focus on the object. He doesn’t want to be distracted by the background

“If we look at human society, I don’t want to know the past tense of this object or its surroundings”

The lives of the migrant workers are full of everyday struggles. Kennedy doesn’t want to struggle like that

He doesn’t like to live a practical or normal life. He lives his hopes, hopes that live inside his sentiments
